Wherever You Go: Safety First

Dangerous, dark and unsafe. Those are the first words that come to mind when I ask people about their expectations of Mexico. Expectations mainly based on drugs war reports in the media but also due to the unsafe reputation of capital Mexico City. I´m the last person to deny that horrible things have happened and are still happening in this country. I´m not trying to defend the nation for it nor am I saying that the administration has been doing a good job. Last year, Mexico ranked the 105th least corrupt country in the world, a problem that has greatly contributed to the crime problems. But when you ask me if I feel safe living in this seemingly dangerous country, I say “yes, very”.

A Business Abroad: Two Dreams in One

Being your own boss of a business of your passion in the country of your dreams. It´s probably the highest form of freedom, the crème de la crème of self-actualization. I can´t say I run my own company here but I have firsthand information on starting and running a business abroad through Jan´s e-commerce company, the main reason we moved to Mexico.

Today Cyberpuerta.mx is a well-established e-shop shipping all over the Mexican republic. With both entrepreneurship and internationality running through his blood most things seemed to come natural to him, but there were definitely difficulties along the way. A couple of observations Jan pointed out to be useful for those considering starting a business abroad and pursuing to live two dreams in one:

Six challenges every entrepreneur abroad will face

Mexico City is a popular travel destination but its surroundings are quite spectacular as well. Do you have three additional days to explore the south of the Mexican capital? Then treat yourself and hit the road. You´ll drive through Mexico´s highest mountains and enjoy the beauty of some of the country´s prettiest colonial towns.

The Secret for Expat Couples Revealed

Everything was different. Basics such as the dry air, risky tap water and perception of time. Everything was different except for one thing: my relationship. It was the only factor that hadn´t changed. We knew we could always rely on us.

One quick search on the Web and you´ll find out that countless variables of international relocation may have a negative influence on your relationship. This occasionally results into break ups abroad and even longtime marriages happen to be causal victims of this big life change.

We were mainly grateful to be both foreigners being able to understand and support each other to approach the changes and conquer the challenges. My relationship was good but it was about to become even better. Here´s a story from a different perspective:

How Blogging Can Make a Difference

Many expatriates take up the pen to publish their story. There´s a big variety of expat blogs and books out there: Some witty, honest or fictional, others insightful, open-minding, or way too personal. Motivations to write vary from networking via online media, documenting experiences not to forget, staying in touch with home, or helping new expats in the region.

It has been one year ago that I published my first post. Initially, I started blogging to share what I´d learned to help others going through similar situations. During the last 12 months it has become clear to me that, whatever motive we have in the beginning, blogging is also a great way to organize our upside down turned lives. Post for post we get a grip on our new reality.

The step from silent reader to up-speaking writer takes some courage, but like anything that isn´t easy to accomplish, the satisfaction is the greatest. Are you thinking of making your story public? Read along about how I eventually discovered the joy of writing publicly.

Why 20-Somethings Should Move Abroad

In 2010, I met a guy in Hamburg, let´s call him Tom. He told me about how it had always been his dream to move to a tropical island one day and live a humble life. Tom said, however, that the more time went by, the less likely he would ever make his dream come true. Why? Stability. He was in his thirties and he finally had a nice home, great job, stable income and longtime friends. Why risk a happy life that had taken so long to construct? He concluded my attempts of convincing him to leave anyway with the words: “I should have left in my twenties.”

By chance we were doing the right thing (moving in our twenties) but how could Tom have known that? If nobody warns you, it´s easy to get caught up between getting your degree, starting a 9 to 5 job, and paying off your student loans. So here I am to tell you: If living abroad is on your list, do it in your twenties!!

8 Soft Skills Any Expatriate Should Possess

Life abroad is not for everyone. Though it´s certainly a great way to explore and learn more about the world and about you, it´s also full of challenges and unexpected difficulties. The ability to successfully execute your idea of living in a foreign country depends strongly on who you are and what you want in life. Have therefore an honest look at yourself before taking the leap.

So what makes someone the right person for expatriation? How would he or she be like? I imagined a person who could easily adapt  to everyday life anywhere. Someone who can make a living and a life out of nothing. I wondered and I thought of a set of skills any expatriate should posses to at least some extend. Do you possess all eight?
