The Ultimate 12-Day Yucatán Road Trip

This road trip crossing Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula is a fantastically diversified journey difficult to top. Most travelers limit their visit to the Caribbean Coast and World Wonder Chichén Itzá missing out on a bunch of other terrific highlights in the area. I hope you´ll decide differently after reading the complete round trip coming up.

The comforts of short distances and easily accessible sights make the Mexican peninsula a paradise for road trip lovers. Though well-conditioned roads through a flat landscape provide perfect conditions also for inexperienced roadtrippers.

What to expect:

  • six ancient Mayan ruins
  • four Spanish-Colonial towns
  • five cenotes to swim, dive and relax
  • a day and night in the jungle
  • white sand Caribbean beaches
  • awesome nightlife
  • one optional diving paradise

Every journey is unique so some modesty is required of my side.
For now travel with me and find out for yourself one day!

We travel not to escape life
But for life not to escape us

Life Abroad & the Desire to Travel

Hi there, I´m back again :) I´m sorry for my three-week break. Lots of things going on here. We traveled through Chiapas and Oaxaca for 10 days, I´m working on a new blog design for Evolution Abroad (I´m so excited to show you soon!) and we just moved to another apartment. We now have more space and daylight and we have an amazing view over the city. I hope it will fuel me with lots of inspiration to continue my writing. Stay with me to find out 😉

During our trip I´ve been thinking about traveling and the way living abroad influences travel habits. Let´s see if you feel the same about this topic.

Receiving Guests from Home

If you live in a desirable location, you´ll probably have lots of visiting guests. We are always excited to have family and friends staying with us. They usually accept our offer for a couple of nights or sometimes even weeks. They benefit from our local experience and we hope to contribute to a dream vacation.

This month we´re showing Jan´s parents around Mexico. They have been quite impressed so far. In one week´s time we took them from the wet woods along the tropical mountains to the Pacific beaches. Everything that should be seen and done in the area will be soon ticked off the list.

Although I love catching up in our new country of residence, there is also a flip side of the fun: With overnight guests your daily structure disappears. Spending time together and trying to share a small home has inevitably a big impact on your routines. I´ve learned that whoever is visiting you, it requires good cooperation of both parties to assure it to be a comfortable stay.

How to Make Progress as an Advanced Language Learner

I´ve reached a new stage of language learning: Stagnation. Or how specialists prefer to call it: I´ve hit a language plateau. It´s the flat part of the learning curve where you don´t make significant progress. A common stage among advanced language learners.

At the moment, it is most of all fun to use my foreign languages. I manage to arrange just about anything: My knowledge is sufficient for my job, to develop friendships and organize daily tasks. Every now and then I learn a new word or expression, but there is no urgent need to progress rapidly like there was in the beginning. I have to admit that I find this stage quite comfortable.

Nevertheless, the altitude of my current plateau isn´t the right one yet: Vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation can still use improvement. I get my points across, but I´d like to do so more naturally. I will have to put more effort in order to reach a higher plateau I can feel satisfied with. One of the challenges I´m facing: Without necessity of progress motivating myself to progress.

Finding the Guts to Relocate Abroad

It is a big decision you´re about to take; one that involves more than weighing pros and cons between your country and another one. It is a process of inner research about you and your future, your relationship and your family, your dreams and your ambitions. It is quite impressive how considering moving abroad already puts your life upside down.

For this week’s post I tried to recall how we experienced the process of decision-making. I remember very well that Jan and I went through different processes: He was very decisive from the beginning on, whereas I have been procrastinating for months. I was for instance worried about the reactions of my family whereas Jan was more than ready to take its chances in the Mexican market.

My decision-process was very emotional, his was rather rational. Later on I learned that this is a common difference between men and women relocating abroad together. Fortunately, we wanted the same thing in the end; I just needed to get to the deciding point at my own pace. It was good that he took the lead though: I think I would have never been really ready… Continue Reading »

Life´s Biggest Classroom: The World

Like travelling, living abroad puts things into perspective.

The act of leaving every certainty behind leaves us completely vulnerable and alone. Daily worries that ruled our life only a while ago, are suddenly completely insignificant. The world is ready to teach us its lessons and there is no chance to cheat. Getting rid of rooted prejudices and aligning our beliefs are only two of its required classes.

Who won´t adjust, will break and return with a bit more self-knowledge and a bad experience.

If you´re open to get detached from familiar backgrounds, you´ll have to throw out redundant baggage. What´s left over is you, with your new companions and many impressions and experiences. Each one is unique, sometimes shocking sometimes enlightening, but most of all thought-provoking. It brings you closer to your core.

Living abroad is the perfect way to test your limits, expand your knowledge and enrich your life. Continue Reading »

Reflections on Loneliness & Social Isolation

Last week a friend invited me out for lunch. She wanted to talk about her experience of living two years in France. We have known each other for only a couple of months, but she was very open and honest with me.

She told me that one of the hardest things for her was filling in the lonely days. It broke my heart to hear how she kept trying but didn´t manage to develop enough satisfying relationships within her two-year stay.

Although I feel comfortable with my social life at the moment, I can relate so much to her attempts of building up a new social network and the feeling of social exclusion that is often experienced by expatriates.

Her story triggered some reflections on my own lonely period:
